Paleopathology in preceramic bone remains from Colombia.
Abstract
Paleopathological studies in Colombia have been fairly circumstantial. A few archaeological explorations have uncovered and described alterations in bone material, with nosologies typical of syphilis.
As a result of these excavations at the Vistahermosa and Aguazuque I sites, among others, on the Bogotá Plateau (2,640 mts. above sea level), we have been able to demonstrate the incidence of Treponemus pallidum, at a fairly early date, in certain pre-ceramic and transitional horticultural individuals from these sites.
These characteristics will, we hope, give rise to interesting controversies among specialists in etiology, concerning the extent and particularity of the effects of this disease, which will also be of great interest to those concerned with the history of medicine.
