Historical archeology in Popayán
Abstract
The aim of this article is to clarify the meaning and importance of
the importance of historical archaeology, which until now has been
almost ignored in Colombia. The aim is to consider it as a specialized
discipline, capable of comparing, correcting and expanding
the content of written documents based on intercultural contact between
natives and Europeans.
Various field experiences have led us to emphasize the importance of developing this particular type of archaeology, especially in regions such as ours, which are exposed to seismic phenomena or disasters of another kind; for the theory as well as the methodology to be applied must always be based on knowledge relating to architecture, geology, the natural sciences, art etc.
In fact, the excavations carried out between 1981 and 1985 in a number of buildings in the historic area of Popayan, as well as the initial analysis of the materials unearthed, have clearly shown the urgent need to develop this branch of archaeology, which of course presupposes the prior training of specialized professionals.
