Abstract

Few constructions put such a particular accent on the landscape as the windmills in the middle of a plain, on a hill outside a village or the watermill in the forest, in the polders of Holland or in Germany, in the mountains of Colombia. In the past there were thousands of hydraulic and wind mills. In their time they were excellent machines, which were up to the demands of production and technology. Today in many countries they are national monuments and are under protection, they are carefully preserved and many are still working.
The hydraulic mill built by the Romans was the most elementary form of all machines. In 536, on the Tiber in Rome, the mills crushed the grain. In the 6th-10th centuries watermills were built in Europe and at the end of the 10th century windmills were built.
