Remarks on the genus Buteogallus
Abstract
In September, 1959, I was able to examine the collections of the Museum Xavier Prado in Lima. Doctors Hans Wilhelm and Maria Koepcke who, since the war, have done so much for that Museum and for the natural history of Peru were with me. I noticed two hawks from Tumbez in northwestern Peru, labeled Leucopternis but which seemed to be Buteogallus, though not typical. These were later sent to New York and proved to be similar to three peculiar specimens of B. anthracinus subtilis, two from Ecuador and one from El Real, Río Tuyra, Panama, discussed by Chapman (1926, p. 233). These five birds, whether adults or immatures, differ from ordinary Black Hawks by being much paler-brownish or yellowish brown rather than black. This type of coloration is not rare in subtilis. A third specimen from Tumbez mentioned by Hellmayr and Conover (1949, p. 191) is presumably of the usual blackish type.
