Finding of Cauca guan Penelope perspicax in the municipality of Buenos Aires-Cauca, Colombia
Abstract
From 2023 to 2025, the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Cauca (CRC), in coordination with the Las Delicias Indigenous Reserve and rural communities in the municipality of Cajibío (Cauca), implemented a community-based monitoring program to search for the Cauca guan Penelope perspicax, a species endemic to Colombia and classified as Vulnerable (VU) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Through environmental education workshops, participatory mapping, and the installation of camera traps in priority areas, the first documented record of the species in the department of Cauca since 1987 was obtained. The finding occurred in a 70.78-hectare forest fragment located in the village of Las Delicias (municipality of Buenos Aires, Cauca), where 14 detections of the species were recorded, enabling the identification of at least four individuals—three adults and one chick or juvenile.Key words: cracids, participatory monitoring, threatened species, endemism, camera traps.
