The effects of urbanisation on mangrove ecosystems and challenges for sustainable development in Costa do Sol, Maputo, Mozambique
Abstract
The Costa do Sol area in Maputo, Mozambique presents a pertinent case study to explore the intricate interactions between urbanization, mangrove ecosystems and the associated social and environmental challenges. This research investigates the multifaceted impacts of urban expansion on mangrove habitats and subsequent implications for local communities and environmental sustainability. Through a combination of field surveys, remote sensing data, and socioeconomic assessments, this study examines changes in mangrove range and health over the past three decades. The analysis reveals alarming trends in mangrove degradation and habitat loss due to expanding urban infrastructure and population growth. The findings highlight the urgent need for targeted conservation and management efforts to safeguard these vital coastal ecosystems. In addition, environmental challenges arising from urban sprawl, such as increased pollution, sedimentation, and habitat fragmentation, are thoroughly examined. This research sheds light on the ecological repercussions of urbanization on mangrove resilience, biodiversity and the essential ecosystem services they provide, including coastal protection and carbon sequestration. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into the impacts of urbanization on mangrove ecosystems and the social and environmental challenges faced in the Costa do Sol region of Maputo, Mozambique. The findings underscore the importance of integrated and adaptive management approaches to mitigate the negative consequences of urban sprawl and promote the long-term sustainability of both urban centres and the priceless mangrove habitats.
