Observações sobre o gênero Buteogallus
Resumo
Em setembro de 1959, tive a oportunidade de examinar as coleções do Museu Xavier Prado, em Lima. Os doutores Hans Wilhelm e Maria Koepcke, que, desde a guerra, têm feito muito por esse museu e pela história natural do Peru, estavam comigo. Observei dois gaviões de Tumbez, no noroeste do Peru, rotulados como Leucopternis, mas que pareciam ser Buteogallus, embora não fossem típicos. Mais tarde, eles foram enviados para Nova York e provaram ser semelhantes a três espécimes peculiares de B. anthracinus subtilis, dois do Equador e um de El Real, Río Tuyra, Panamá, discutidos por Chapman (1926, p. 233). Essas cinco aves, sejam adultas ou imaturas, diferem dos falcões negros comuns por serem muito mais marrom-claras ou marrom-amareladas do que pretas. Esse tipo de coloração não é raro em subtilis. Um terceiro espécime de Tumbez mencionado por Hellmayr e Conover (1949, p. 191) é presumivelmente do tipo preto comum.
