Premalignant lesions of the cervix in patients with cervical ectopia and negative cytology for malignancy at the cervical pathology center of the Susana López de Valencia Hospital in Popayán-Cauca.
Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of premalignant lesions of the uterine cervix in patients with ectopia and negative cytology for malignancy. Design: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study.
Method: Two hundred and three patients were preselected who had negative cytology for malignancy and abnormal-looking cervixes on speculoscopy. Eighty-three patients were included in whom ectopia was confirmed by colposcopy, and a cervical biopsy was taken for histopathological study.
Results: Statistical analysis was performed using STATA V10 software. According to their sociodemographic characteristics, the average age of the population was 32 years (range 18-51), of which 75.9% (63) belonged to urban areas and 24.1% (20) to rural areas. The linked, subsidized, and contributory social security regimes are represented by 24.1%, 38.54%, and 37.35%, respectively. Of the total number of patients studied in relation to their histopathological diagnosis, 32.53% were diagnosed with cervicitis, 3.61% with CIN I (mild dysplasia), and 63.86% with viral flat condyloma.
Conclusion: The study population is a low-risk population. No significance was found in the bivariate analysis. No high-grade intraepithelial lesions were found, but there was a high frequency of viral flat condyloma.
