Abstract

Material examined. Atlántico, Bocas de Ceniza, 488,299. surroundings of Barranquilla, 1. Bolívar, Canal del Dique, near Cartagena, 1. The presence of Anas bahamensis in northern South America was known only from a few specimens that have been found sporadically (1). The first information regarding their presence on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia was published by Dugand (1939 and 1945) who reported the capture of three specimens in the vicinity of Barranquilla and the Guájaro Lagoon in the Atlantic and said he had seen others in the swampy canyons of the Magdalena River. The cited author considered these birds as migratory from the north and therefore referred them to the nominated form. Later Hellmayr and Conover (1948) mentioned this duck from Curaçao, the Guianas and northeastern Brazil, assigning the specimens also to the nominal form; in 1949 de Schauensee included this subspecies in his list of birds of Colombia without comment, as did Phelps and Phelps (1958) for Venezuela.
