New woodpecker subspecies from northern Colombia:
Picumnus cinnamomeus persaturatus, new subspecies
Abstract
During the course of geological fieldwork in 1960 the author made a small bird collection in northern Colombia, a report of which is currently being prepared. Among these birds is a skin of Picumnus cinnamomeus from San Isidro, northwest of El Carmen (Dpt. Bolivar), that apparently represents a hitherto undescribed subspecies. It dif fers considerably from specimens of the nearby P. c. cinnamomeus by its much darker coloration throughout. In this respect it resembles the dark from P. c. venezuelensis that inhabits the humid region around the southern part of Lake Maracaibo. The extent of the spotting of the crown is close to the intermediate venezuelan subspecies P. c. perijanus, but the coloration of the wing and tail separates P. c. persaturatus from all other known forms.Downloads
