Notes on the avifauna of the Guajira Peninsula
Abstract
The Guajira Peninsula, located in the extreme northeast of Colombia, is the northernmost point of the South American continent. The birds of this remote region of the Republic of Colombia were mentioned as early as 1847 when F. de Lafresnaye described some species that were supposed to come from Riohacha. Of the workers who explored the Santa Marta Mountains only F. Joad (1870: Valledupar), F. A. Simons (1878: Valledupar), 878: Valledupar), and M. A. Carriker (1914: Riohacha; 1920: Arroyo de Arenas, Fonseca) made some collections in the semi-arid region to the east and southeast of the Santa Marta Mountains (see, Todd and Carriker 1922: 21-49 and 577-582). However, no ornithologists worked in the arid region of the Guajira proper until 1941 when Dr. A. Wetmore and M. A. Carriker, accompanied by F. C. Lehmann V. traveled to the northeastern tip of the peninsula where they collected birds in the Serranía de Macuira, in the vicinity of Nazareth, Puerto Estrella and Puerto López.
